Antigua was one of the first islands to be
explored and settled int he Caribbean, and it is steeped in
the graciousness of British tradition. There are many historic
sites to tour on land and shipwrecks to dive to in the clear
waters. The landscape is made up of rolling yellow hills and
the sweeping curves of protected bays and inlets. Antigua
is also blessed with 365 beaches and some of the driest and
most gentle weather in the Caribbean.
Warm
waters, gentle currents, and superb undersea visibility in
Antigua’s coral reefs make it a magnet for swimmers
and sailors, snorkelers and scuba divers. English Harbour,
where Admiral Nelson led the British Navy in 1784, and the
restored Nelson's Dockyard National Park, are popular attractions.
Saturday morning is market time in St. John’s, the capital.
Buyers are expected to negotiate prices on handicrafts and
other items.
Sunday afternoons are for hiking the trail up from English
Harbour to Shirley Heights. At the summit, mingle with locals
at the barbecue, dance to steel band and reggae tunes, and
toast the panoramic sunset view with a cool rum punch. Maritime
history tours and casino forays add to a week’s fun.
