It's easy to see why this is considered one of the premier resorts of the whole Caribbean. It's elegant, understated, quiet, beautiful, with two lovely beaches. The decor is a modern, Caribbean motif, using bright colors, old accents (there's a dug-out wooden canoe in the reception area), and West Indian styling (gingerbread fretwork). It complements perfectly the natural environment -- bright flowers and flowing palms.

The property offers the calm reef-protected shores of Grand Cul de Sac, a favorite for windsurfing and watersports. On the other side, through the coconut palms, is the rougher, ocean side. There are also two freshwater pools and a Jacuzzi.

If privacy is what you're after, 14 of the suites have their own private pools and DVD's. The rooms are decorated in deep bright, tropical colors, some with hardwood floors. The rooms feature phones, satellite TV, air-conditioning, mini-bars, ceiling fans and safe deposit boxes. Mattelasse bed coverings, guest robes, new combinations of wood finishes delight the eye.

The watersports center has pedal boats, windsurfing, snorkeling equipment, and there's also tennis courts and a fitness center. There's a library as well.

The food, too, is exquisite in Bartolomeo, the fine dining restaurant with piano bar, and Indigo, the beachside bistro. Jeans, T-shirts and shorts are not permitted in the dining restaurant after 7:30 p.m.
